Counselling therapy in Basingstoke

“The past affects people—some let it decide who they are, while others make it part of what they will do.” ― Eric Berne, Games People Play

The NHS describes counselling as ‘a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.’ There are all sorts of reasons why people might consider counselling or psychotherapy, from a difficult life event to an upsetting health condition, from stress at work to childhood trauma.

Counselling is not a one-size-fits-all process, but one that is tailored to you. It isn’t about the therapist telling you what to do, but about helping you to explore what is happening and why. The way we feel today is often rooted way back in the past, and whilst we cannot change what happened yesterday, we can change our way of thinking so that tomorrow is better. I have had clients say to me that they can’t understand why psychotherapy works, but that somehow it does!

If you are not sure whether therapy is for you, make an appointment for an introductory session and see what you think. Sessions last for 50 minutes and are charged at £50.

TEENAGERS

Teenagers have a right to confidentiality in therapy just as adults do. Counselling is a confidential service between therapist and client, whatever their age. Boundaries are set by the young person him- or herself, as he or she needs to have complete confidence in the process to benefit from the therapy. Therefore, I do not give ‘reports’ to parents. The only time I would break confidentiality is if there were concerns for the welfare of the young person, and I would make every effort to discuss it with him or her first.
